Boxing Video Games

Boxing takes a strong body and a clear head. In countries like Canada and Bangladesh it is a major sport, and you cannot just play a casual match on a Sunday afternoon the way you would with tennis or basketball. A boxing video game is the closest alternative, bringing the atmosphere of stepping into the ring to a home television setup.

New boxing releases have been scarce in recent years, though several studios produced memorable titles across earlier console generations.

Punch-Out

Punch-Out came out in 1987, built by Nintendo for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). It went through several versions, with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out remaining the best-known entry. Players step into the shoes of Little Mac, a small underdog who trains hard and works his way up to a title bout against Mike Tyson.

Fight Night 2004

Fight Night 2004 was developed by Electronic Arts and released that same year. Its standout feature was Total Punch Control, which mapped punches directly to the analogue stick. A flick of the stick threw a straight punch, a hook, a lean or a block. Following the original release, EA expanded the series with three sequels:

  • Fight Night Round 2 - 2005
  • Fight Night Round 3 - 2006
  • Fight Night Round 4 - 2009

Fight Night Champion followed in 2011 as the most recent entry in the franchise. It includes three main modes: Fight Now, Legacy and Champion. Legacy mode remains the most popular option, allowing players to pick a fighter and work through defining bouts across a full career.

These titles were released across major home systems, including PlayStation and Nintendo platforms.
